Smoke is a budget armor runeword in Diablo 2 Resurrected that provides exceptional resistances for Nightmare and early Hell difficulty. Created with Nef + Lum in any 2-socket body armor, it's one of the easiest ways to achieve resistance capping with minimal investment.

Resistance Powerhouse

Smoke's standout feature is All Resistances +50, which is massive for a 2-rune runeword. This single mod often caps resistances in Nightmare and provides a solid foundation in Hell. The armor also grants +75% Enhanced Defense, +280 Defense vs. Missiles for protection against ranged enemies, 20% Faster Hit Recovery, and +10 to Energy. Combined with Ancient's Pledge or Rhyme shield, resistance problems essentially disappear through mid-game.

Best Uses and Bases

Use lightweight bases like Mage Plate (55 str), Dusk Shroud (77 str), or Wyrmhide (84 str) to minimize strength requirements. Both Nef and Lum drop from Nightmare Countess. Smoke works for any class during Nightmare and early Hell progression until you can afford Chains of Honor, Enigma, Fortitude, or other endgame armors. Perfect for hardcore characters who prioritize survival over offense.
