Chaos
Claws
Chaos is a PvP-focused Assassin claw runeword in Diablo 2 Resurrected that enables the Whirlwind Assassin (WWsin) archetype. Created with Fal + Ohm + Um in 3-socket assassin claws, this runeword grants +1 to Whirlwind—the only way Assassins can access this iconic Barbarian skill—making it essential for builds centered around this unique playstyle.
Whirlwind Access
Chaos's defining feature is granting Whirlwind to Assassins, transforming them into melee-focused hybrids. The +35% Increased Attack Speed, +290-340% Enhanced Damage, and Adds 216-471 Magic Damage create respectable physical output. The 9% Chance to Cast Level 11 Frozen Orb on Striking and 11% Chance to Cast Level 9 Charged Bolt on Striking add elemental coverage, though notably these procs don't trigger during Whirlwind itself—only on regular attacks.
PvP Ghost Assassin Meta
Chaos shines in PvP where WWsins (also called Ghost Assassins) combine Whirlwind's mobility with Assassin toolkit. The standard setup uses Chaos in a Suwayyah as the primary weapon displayed above boots, with dual Feral Claws featuring Fools modifiers as the secondary weapon displayed above gloves. This weapon-switching setup maximizes attack rating and damage. Whirlwind excels against casters and mobile opponents in PvP but struggles against Whirlwind Barbarians who outclass it in pure melee combat.
PvM Limitations
Outside PvP, Whirlwind Assassins are relatively weak. Damage output lags behind mainstream PvM builds significantly. The proc spells sound impressive but fail to trigger during Whirlwind, limiting their effectiveness to pre-buffing or cleanup. The 25% Chance of Open Wounds, +10 to Strength, and +15 Life After Each Demon Kill provide utility but don't compensate for the fundamental DPS deficit compared to Trapsin or Mosaic builds.
Base Selection and Build Requirements
Optimal Claw Bases
- Suwayyah - Fastest base speed, preferred for primary Chaos claw to maximize Whirlwind frames
- Runic Talons - Alternative with good damage if speed breakpoints are already met
- Staff mods matter less for Chaos than other claw runewords, but +Mind Blast, +Venom, or +Lightning Sentry add hybrid utility
Expensive Build Investment
WWsin ranks among the most expensive Assassin builds. Beyond Chaos requiring Ohm, the build needs extensive supporting gear: Fools modifier rare claws cost multiple high runes, and optimal setups demand Enigma for teleport, or other endgame pieces. This makes Chaos completely unviable as a ladder starter despite the unique playstyle appeal.
Niche Appeal
Chaos exists for players who want to experience Whirlwind on an Assassin, period. It's a fun, unconventional build with PvP viability but lacks the efficiency for serious PvM farming. The Ohm rune could create more practical options like contributing toward Call to Arms or other endgame runewords. Only craft Chaos if you're specifically committed to the WWsin playstyle or building a PvP Ghost Assassin—it's a luxury build for experienced players seeking variety rather than optimization.
