Spirit
Swords/Shields
Spirit is arguably the best caster runeword in Diablo 2 Resurrected for both weapons and shields. Created with Tal, Thul, Ort, and Amn runes in any 4-socket sword or shield, it's available at level 25 and provides +2 to All Skills plus exceptional casting speed for an absurdly low cost.
Caster Supremacy
Both versions provide +2 to All Skills, +25-35% Faster Cast Rate (variable roll), +55% Faster Hit Recovery, and +89-112 to Mana. The weapon version adds 1-50 Lightning Damage, 3-14 Cold Damage, +75 Poison Damage, and 7% Life Stolen Per Hit. The shield version instead provides +35% to Cold/Lightning/Poison Resist and Attacker Takes Damage of 14. Both versions share +22 to Vitality and +250 Defense vs. Missile. Many players reroll these runewords multiple times to get the perfect 35% FCR roll.
Weapon Bases
Make Spirit weapon in a Crystal Sword or Broad Sword for minimal strength requirements. Crystal Swords are ideal—they require only 43 strength and can be found with 4 sockets in Nightmare or by using Larzuk's quest on a white Crystal Sword/Broad Sword/Long Sword from late Normal difficulty (area level 26-40). The weapon version outclasses virtually all unique and rare weapons in Normal and Nightmare.
Shield Bases and The Monarch Problem
For non-Paladins, only elite shields can have 4 sockets: Monarch (156 str, level 54), Aegis, and Ward. Monarch is the only practical choice, but it only drops in Hell difficulty. This means non-Paladins can't use Spirit shields until Hell difficulty despite the level 25 requirement. Paladins can use 4-socket Paladin shields from any difficulty, allowing them to benefit from Spirit shields much earlier. Farm white Monarchs in Hell Difficulty level 85 areas and use Larzuk's quest to add sockets. The earliest and easiest such areas are Mausoleum and Pits. Spirit Monarchs are also used on weapon swap alongside Call to Arms to boost Battle Orders.
Rune Farming
All four runes can be obtained in Nightmare Countess. Use Spirit Weapon from level 25 through Hell difficulty. Replace the weapon with Heart of the Oak eventually, or another item as per the specific build, but many casters use Spirit shields permanently as they remain competitive with endgame options.
