Claude vs Diablo 2 Resurrected: HD Map Tiles, Hidden Sounds, Unused Models and Easter Eggs

What happens when you let an AI loose on Diablo 2 Resurrected? We pointed Claude at the D2R game files and let it dig. It read the files, rebuilt what it found and wrote it all up. We checked it and turned it into pages.

Here's the short version: every findings page with a taste of what's inside, plus the easter eggs and hidden bits that didn't need a page of their own.

Every HD map tile, in 3D

Loading the tile…

D2R builds its maps from a few thousand pre-made rooms. We rebuilt every one of them in 3D, straight from the HD files. Spin them around, hover anything to see what it is, and learn the details that tell a dead end from the way forward. Above: the Worldstone Chamber, where Baal waits.

Sounds the game never plays

About 750 sound files ship with the game and never play: boss taunts, hero quips, NPC lines and effects. Press play on a few of our favourites.

  • DurielI am your doom!Duriel's second taunt. The script marks it unused and the game points its slot at an empty file, so you only ever hear the first one.
  • AndarielThe East is beyond your grasp.Andariel's third taunt. Recorded and scripted, but only her first two taunts are hooked up.
  • DiabloThe longest of Diablo's unused laughs.
  • AmazonWait... Don't I get three wishes?A cheeky take for freeing Izual's soul. The game plays a different, serious recording instead.
  • NecromancerKu Y'Leh's immortal ashes. I wonder if they'd miss any.The Necromancer's cut line for finishing the Golden Bird quest.

Act 3 map tells

Spider Forest Webby W decoy clearing: a web-wrapped corpse lies just inside the first stone arch

The Act 3 jungle clearings aren't all the same. Often you can tell from the first screen whether you found the quest dungeon or a decoy. In this Spider Forest clearing, a web-wrapped corpse by the first arch means decoy: turn around.

What the patch notes didn't tell you

Diablo 2 Resurrected patch 3.3 hidden changes found in the game files

We compared the files of patch 3.1.2 and 3.3 line by line. Colossal Ancients that shred your merc, a quiet Gheed's Fortune fix, Warlock Consume bonuses that never worked and loot tables waiting to be switched on. Every unannounced change in 3.2 and 3.3.

Easter eggs and hidden stuff

Now the fun part. None of these needed a page of their own, so here they are.

A horse, a pig and a seagull nobody ever met

Three of the monsters D2R added to the game's tables never show up anywhere. They have full HD models, textures and idle and walk animations, but no attacks, no death animation and no spot on any map. The horse even has a slot to be placed on Act 5 maps, and no map uses it.

Costdownkevin is in 11 rooms, not just one

In 2021 a Redditor spotted a tiny chalk stick figure on a wall in Duriel's Lair, visible only in HD graphics. It's Costdownkevin, an in-joke mascot of Vicarious Visions, the studio that remade D2R with Blizzard. He also hides in their Crash Bandicoot and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater remakes.

Turns out he's not alone. The same drawing sits on a wall in 10 more rooms, in four of the five acts. Some of these rooms are random map pieces, so he's not there in every game. And he's tiny, so look closely.

This is what you're looking for: Costdownkevin as he's drawn in the game's HD textures. Each shot below is taken in the in-game camera, centred on him. Walls in front of him are faded out, like the game does when you walk behind them. Click a shot to explore that room in 3D.

"There is no Cow Level" … as a game mode

There is no Cow LevelFind and defeat a new oddity threatening the Rogue Encampment.

The game's menu text has a title and a description for a game mode, right next to the texts of the other game modes. Nothing in the game uses them, and they are still there in patch 3.3. A cut idea, or something not announced yet? Your guess is as good as ours.

Moo Moo Farm, "a non-existent level"

Terror Zones track how much of each group of zones you have cleared. Every group has a name and can play an effect when you finish it. Exactly one group has an effect: the Cow Level, which plays a random cow sound. And the name the game gives that group? a non-existent level. There is no Cow Level, after all.

Dev jokes in the text files

  • The Butcher, The Baker and The Candlestick Maker. Baal's minion waves in the Throne of Destruction are "Baal Subject 1 to 5" in the files (Colenzo, Achmel, Bartuc, Ventar and Lister). The files also have Baal Subject 6, 6a and 6b, and their names are straight out of the nursery rhyme "Rub-a-dub-dub, three men in a tub". Nothing uses them.
  • "This Cow Bites". An unused monster name, filed between the champion modifier names like Mana Burn and Aura Enchanted. No cow in the game ever wears it.
  • "uncle f#%* comedy central(c)". The Ancients' statues on Arreat Summit are named Moe, Curly and Larry in the files, after the Three Stooges. The text entry for "Moe" carries this internal label. It's a nod to "Uncle F**ka" from the 1999 South Park movie, with a copyright sign for Comedy Central, the channel that airs South Park.
  • Gheed's nomadic phallus. In the Horadric Malus quest script, right after Charsi complains about her hammer, Gheed has an alternative line marked unused and never recorded: I have offered my nomadic phallus, but to no avail. Probably for the best.

A few more oddities

  • A Hell Bovine battle axe. An HD prop named after the Cow Level's axe-swinging cows, filed with the Pandemonium Fortress weapon props. It's never placed anywhere.
  • "Cain not created, look in town, dammit". A developer error message for the day Deckard Cain fails to show up. It's still in the game today.
  • Fireworks. One developer's personal folder of test effects shipped with the game, fireworks included. Nothing ever sets them off.

That's the tour

Each page above goes a lot deeper, so pick the one that sounds the most fun. We'll keep digging, and new finds will show up here.

A fair warning: this research is AI-assisted. We checked what we could, but the deeper pages can still contain mistakes. Spotted one, or tested something in game? Let us know and we'll fix it.
