This elite Colossus Blade delivers massive physical damage with scaling bonuses, though it has fallen from its throne as the game's premier weapon in the modern runeword era.
Legendary Damage
The Grandfather boasts unrivaled base damage among unique swords with +150-250% Enhanced Damage and a unique +(2.5 Per Character Level) 2-247 To Maximum Damage that scales throughout progression, reaching 247 bonus damage at level 99. This scaling mechanic allows damage to reach staggering amounts at high levels. The +50% Bonus to Attack Rating ensures hits connect reliably. Defensive stats include +80 To Life and +20 To All Attributes, which stack multiplicatively to provide massive life pools, improved attack rating through Dexterity, and enhanced damage through Strength. The weapon is Indestructible, never requiring repairs.
Fallen Glory
The Grandfather was the ultimate Barbarian weapon in early Diablo 2 patches when it could be wielded one-handed. In patch 1.10+, it became two-handed, losing much of its appeal. While it can still achieve fast attack speeds when socketed with Shael runes, it lacks critical endgame stats like crushing blow, deadly strike, or ignore target's defense that define modern builds. The extremely high requirements (189 Strength, 110 Dexterity, level 81) and extreme rarity (quality level 85) make it one of the hardest items to find. Grief, Last Wish, Breath of the Dying, and even Death runewords dramatically outperform it. Today, The Grandfather serves primarily as a collector's trophy, a mercenary weapon, or a nostalgic choice for players who remember its Diablo 1 and early D2 glory days. Despite losing its crown, it remains an iconic symbol of Diablo's history.
