This weapon transforms from a modest early find into a devastating tool for high-level characters and mercenaries.
Level-Scaling Deadly Strike
Headstriker's power comes from two level-based modifiers: +1 to maximum damage per character level (reaching +99 at level 99) and +1.5% Deadly Strike per character level (reaching 148% at level 99, effectively guaranteeing critical hits past level 67). Deadly Strike doubles damage output, making Headstriker's inconsistent damage range (40 minimum to potentially 184 maximum) far more effective in practice. Combined with +150% enhanced damage and +15 to strength, this weapon deals impressive damage once leveled.
Mercenary Specialist
Headstriker has found its true calling on Act 5 Barbarian mercenaries, particularly those using Bash. Due to a quirk in damage calculation, Bash mercenaries triple the listed bonus damage from weapons, making Headstriker's +99 maximum damage extraordinarily effective. An ethereal upgraded Headstriker (Conquest Sword) becomes one of the highest damage weapons available for Act 5 mercenaries, combining guaranteed critical strikes with massive damage scaling.
When to Use
For player characters, Headstriker works from levels 39-55 but faces competition from superior weapons in Hell difficulty. The Prevent Monster Heal modifier adds utility against regenerating enemies. Most players upgrade this weapon to elite and give it to their Act 5 mercenary rather than using it themselves, where it remains viable even in endgame content thanks to the guaranteed Deadly Strike and mercenary damage synergy.
