Butcher's Pupil

Butcher's Pupil is an exceptional unique Cleaver at level 39 that combines high damage output with powerful physical damage modifiers, making it one of the better exceptional axes.

Physical Damage Powerhouse

Butcher's Pupil excels with +150-200% Enhanced Damage, Adds 30-50 Damage, 30% Increased Attack Speed, 35% Deadly Strike, and 25% Chance of Open Wounds. The Deadly Strike gives a chance to double your damage, while Open Wounds applies bleeding for sustained damage over time. The weapon is Indestructible, eliminating durability concerns entirely.

Solid Nightmare Option

The combination of high variable Enhanced Damage, Deadly Strike, and fast attack speed makes Butcher's Pupil effective for physical damage builds throughout Nightmare difficulty. Open Wounds is particularly valuable against bosses and regenerating enemies. However, by Hell difficulty, the lack of elemental damage, crushing blow, or other utility limits its effectiveness compared to runewords or elite uniques. Most melee builds will upgrade to better weapons by level 50-60, but Butcher's Pupil remains serviceable until then.
